Important information: Mortgage Bridge provides general information and administrative support as a mortgage introducer. It does not provide mortgage or debt advice, assess eligibility, affordability or suitability, or recommend products. Mortgage advice comes from an adviser acting through an FCA-authorised and regulated network.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

If you have moved frequently, a mortgage lender may need information about your previous addresses to verify your identity and connect relevant records. Additional documents or clarification may be requested where information is incomplete or differs between sources.

The number of address changes alone does not establish mortgage eligibility. The lender applies its current criteria to the whole application, including income, expenditure, credit history and the proposed mortgage.

Frequent address changes: Why Do Lenders Ask for Address History?

Address information helps lenders identify applicants and locate relevant credit and other records. It can also help explain differences between the application and supporting documents.

The period requested depends on the lender and its process. There is no single three-year requirement that should be presented as applying to every mortgage application.

Provide the addresses and dates requested accurately. If your circumstances do not fit the application form, ask the receiving adviser or lender how to record them.

Moving Frequently Does Not Explain Why You Moved

People move for many reasons, including work, study, changes in a tenancy or household circumstances. The number of moves does not itself establish payment difficulties or financial instability.

A lender may request an explanation or supporting evidence. That provides context but does not require the lender to make an exception to its criteria.

No reason for moving should be described as automatically acceptable to every lender.

Address Links and Financial Associations Are Different

An address link can connect records relating to the same person at different addresses. A financial association connects people through certain shared financial arrangements.

Living with someone or moving into their former home does not, by itself, make their debts or credit history yours. Sharing an address alone does not create a financial association.

Joint financial arrangements, such as a joint current account or joint credit application, may create a separate association. That should not be confused with an ordinary address-history entry.

How Can Address Differences Affect Checks?

Differences in a flat number, building name, postcode or address format may require clarification when information is matched. A recently changed address may also take time to appear in different records.

A mismatch does not automatically establish fraud, poor credit or an incorrect application. The provider or credit reference agency may need evidence to understand the difference.

Equally, accurate address details do not guarantee that every verification check or lending requirement will be met.

Residential and Correspondence Addresses

A residential address describes where you live. A correspondence address is where documents are sent. They may differ for a legitimate reason, but one should not automatically be substituted for the other.

If a statement shows a correspondence address, explain the position rather than assuming the lender will treat it as proof of your current residence.

Do not use a more convenient address to create an appearance of longer residence. Ask the adviser or lender how to record the actual arrangements.

What if You Have Lived at More Than One Address?

Study, work accommodation, shared households or other circumstances can involve more than one address during the same period. Dates may overlap without necessarily being inaccurate.

The lender may need to understand which address was your main residence, which was used for correspondence and how the documents relate to each.

If exact dates are uncertain, explain that rather than presenting an invented timeline as confirmed. The receiving firm can explain what evidence or level of detail it requires.

Electoral Register Information

Electoral register information may help with identity and address checks. However, eligibility to register varies, and absence from the register does not itself establish that an address is false.

If you are eligible, use the official registration process and provide accurate information. If you are not eligible or the records have not yet updated, explain the position to the adviser or lender and ask what alternative evidence it accepts.

Registration does not guarantee mortgage acceptance or an immediate change in a consumer credit score.

Overseas and Temporary Addresses

A period abroad or in temporary accommodation may require different supporting documents. A UK credit report may not describe the full overseas financial history.

Lenders may also have separate residence requirements. These are different from checking that previous addresses have been recorded accurately.

An overseas address does not automatically mean manual underwriting or a specialist lender is required. The relevant criteria and accepted evidence need to be checked.

If you have no fixed address, ask the receiving firm about its process for recording your circumstances and verifying your identity. Do not assume that a standard proof-of-address list covers every situation.

Does Moving Change Your Credit Score?

A consumer credit score may change as reported information changes. The effect depends on the service, its records and scoring method.

A score changing around a move does not prove that the move was the only cause. New account applications or other updates may have occurred at the same time.

A consumer score is not a mortgage eligibility decision. There is no reliable general formula linking a number of moves to a fixed score reduction or lending outcome.

What if Your Credit Report Shows an Unfamiliar Address?

If an address link appears inaccurate or unfamiliar, raise it with the relevant credit reference agency. It can explain the source of the information and its investigation process.

An unfamiliar link does not automatically establish identity theft, but it should be clarified. Likewise, an old address remaining on a report is not necessarily an error where it accurately relates to your history.

Retain written confirmation of any agreed correction. A correction does not guarantee that the whole mortgage application will be accepted.

What happens after a mortgage enquiry?

This is an initial enquiry for administrative support and an adviser introduction where appropriate. It is not a mortgage application or an eligibility assessment. Any mortgage advice comes separately from an adviser acting through an FCA-authorised and regulated network. The receiving firm explains its service, fees and information requirements.

Mortgage Bridge has commercial relationships with receiving firms and receives a percentage of the adviser’s commission when an introduced case completes. Acceptance is not guaranteed.

What About New Builds or Address-Format Problems?

A new or recently converted property may be recorded differently across address systems. Flat numbers, building names and postal addresses can also appear in different formats.

The relevant provider can explain how to investigate a missing or inconsistent address record. The mortgage lender may request supporting documents or clarification.

This is a verification issue to resolve on its facts, rather than evidence that a particular mortgage outcome is guaranteed.

Address Verification Does Not Replace Affordability

Confirming an address does not establish that the proposed mortgage is affordable. The lender separately considers accepted income, household expenditure, other commitments and the borrowing requested.

Similarly, higher income or a larger deposit does not remove the need to satisfy identity and information-verification requirements.

No single factor should be described as automatically outweighing frequent moves or incomplete records.

What Documents May Be Requested?

Depending on the circumstances, an adviser or lender may request:

  • An address timeline covering the period requested.
  • Identity documents accepted under its process.
  • Relevant bank statements, tenancy documents or official correspondence.
  • Evidence explaining a correspondence address or overlapping residence.
  • Documents concerning an overseas address or period abroad.
  • Credit reports and confirmation of agreed corrections.
  • Evidence of income, expenditure and deposit funds for the wider assessment.

Not every document is accepted by every lender. Requirements, document dates and acceptable alternatives vary.

Supply requested information through the receiving firm’s appropriate secure process. Providing documents does not guarantee acceptance.

Is There a Minimum Period at One Address?

There is no universal period at one address that guarantees mortgage acceptance. A lender may have residence or evidence requirements, but these depend on the lender, product and circumstances.

This guide does not recommend delaying a move, changing living arrangements or applying to a particular lender to influence an assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the number of moves determine a mortgage decision?

No outcome can be established from the number alone. A lender assesses the address information and wider application under its current requirements.

How many years of address history are required?

The period depends on the lender and its process. Provide the history requested and ask how to record any gaps, overlaps or unusual circumstances.

Does sharing an address create a financial association?

No. Sharing an address alone does not create a financial association or make another resident’s separate debts yours.

What if a document has a different address?

Explain the difference to the receiving adviser or lender. It may request clarification or alternative evidence rather than treating the addresses as interchangeable.

How Mortgage Bridge Can Help

Mortgage Bridge provides general information and administrative support and passes mortgage enquiries to advisers acting through an FCA-authorised and regulated network. We do not recommend mortgages, assess suitability or confirm whether a lender will accept an application.

An adviser receiving your enquiry can discuss your circumstances and explain the services their firm provides, including any applicable fees. Any mortgage application remains subject to the lender’s assessment and current criteria.

Mortgage Bridge has commercial relationships with receiving firms. When an introduced case completes, we receive a percentage of the commission earned by the adviser. We therefore have a financial interest in completed introductions.

Further information about our role and how enquiries are handled is available in our About Us page, Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy.

This guide provides general information only. It is not mortgage advice. Lender criteria and individual circumstances vary, and no mortgage outcome is guaranteed.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Eligibility, affordability and suitability

Eligibility concerns a lender’s current requirements. Affordability concerns whether repayments can be maintained, taking account of relevant income, expenditure and commitments. Suitability concerns whether a recommended mortgage meets individual needs and circumstances and is assessed when an adviser acting through an FCA-authorised and regulated network provides mortgage advice. Meeting one assessment does not establish the others. Mortgage Bridge does not carry out these assessments.

Costs and independent debt support

Free, independent debt advice is available through MoneyHelper’s debt advice locator. This guide does not recommend changing debt repayments, using savings or taking additional credit to obtain a mortgage.

Securing previously unsecured debts against a home increases the risk to the home. Lower monthly payments do not necessarily mean lower total costs. Longer repayment terms and fees can increase the total amount repaid.

Referral disclosure

Mortgage Bridge has commercial relationships with receiving firms and receives a percentage of the adviser’s commission when an introduced case completes. An introduction does not guarantee acceptance or completion.
